Tonk Strategy

May 01, 2012

There are two ways to win the game of Tonk. The first and fastest way to win is to Drop, which is to lay your cards out when you think the point total in your hand is lower than your opponents point total. The second way to win in Tonk is to get rid of all of your cards before your opponent. You can do this by completing Spreads or Runs or add your cards to your opponents spreads and runs. For example, a spread is 3 or more of a kind, three 5s, 6s, 7s etc or by completing a Run which is consecutive numbers like 5,6, and 7 of the same suit etc. Dropping in Tonk is an easy way to get a win if you have a low point total in your hand. When you are considering dropping before you or your opponent has laid a Spread or Run, 22 points or lower is a good point total to be aggressive with. However, this is if you drop early in the hand, early in the hand is 5 pulls or less. Also, be aware of if your opponent pulls a 10 or higher from the discard pile. This means they are trying to complete a run or a spread with high cards. If you have low cards in your hand, drop and make them pay for letting you know they are trying such a move. If you want to drop after you have laid a spread or run, leaving you with 2 cards in your hand and your opponent still has 5 cards in their hand then 16 points or lower is a good number to drop with. If you and your opponent laid a spread or a run then this is where it gets tricky and you need to remember what cards might be in your opponent’s hand. If you do not have a clue what is in your opponents hand then you should not drop unless you have 6 points or less in your hand. However, if you have a good idea your opponent is holding higher cards then you may want to catch them with their pants down. If you do not want to drop after you and your opponent has laid a spread or run because your opponent may also have low cards in their hand, then you want to complete a spread or run with low cards. In this case you should try to complete a spread or run with Aces, 2s and 3s, this will give you two chances to win, by having the lowest point total or by completing your spread and run. Tonk is just like any other player vs. player game. Observe your opponents tendencies to see what you can get away with to win the game. Learn these Tonk tips and you will WIN more often than not.
