Spades Strategy
August 10, 2009
In addition to being a good Spades player, you need a good system for your card selection in 2 player Spades. Unlike 4 player Spades where the cards are dealt to you, in 2 player Spades you choose whether or not you want to keep the first card dealt to you. On your turn you will be dealt a card and you choose to keep it or discard it. For this you need a system to get the best hand possible.
Here is my system for the card selection:
The cards I keep when I am dealt to are Aces, Kings or any Spade. However, there are situations where you can keep a Queen and there are situations where you may even choose to throw away a Ace or a King. For example, In 2 player Spades for non Spade suits it is difficult to win 3 tricks in the same suit with the 3 high cards Ace, King and Queen. Usually your opponent will not have 3 cards of that suit. Therefore, I only keep a Queen when a Ace or a King of that suit has previously been discarded.
I also discard Aces when I already have the King and Queen of that suit in my hand. That goes for Kings as well, if I already have the Ace and Queen of that suit in my hand I will discard the King.
So here is my system in a nut shell: Aces, Kings and Any Spade I keep. Queens are a maybe depending on if I already have the Ace and King. Jacks and below I never keep. For example, the last thing you want to do is hold a Jack that is not a Spade and when shown your second card it is the Ace of Spades, very frustrating.
Keep in mind this just my own personal system, you may want to keep Aces, Kings, Queens and make the Jacks your maybe, see what works best for you. Learn these 2 player Spades tips and you will WIN more often than not!
